July 2005

Sunday July 3rd 2005 10:16 PM PST

Jen's Birthday was on the 2nd, and we filled the weekend with as much crap as we could. First we went to the Ritz Carlton for Breakfast by the pool. We were met by Jen's father and brother. We ate a great meal, and then stumbled around the grounds and had a great time. Jen and I then headed over to the Huntington to walk around there for awhile. We both wanted to check out the new gallery that's now housing the main gallery artwork. As the main gallery is refurbished, the permanent collection pieces are on display in their temporary home. When everything is complete the art is going back into the house, and the New gallery will become the Huntington's modern art wing.

We headed home after about and hour, then just relaxed before we got on the road to head down to San Clemente. We drove to Anne and Darren's to meet up with them, then hopped in Anne's car to drive down to Splashes in Laguna. We met Kim and Russel at the restaurant. As far as locations goes, this place is great. We got a table with a perfect view of the water and again had a great meal.

After dinner we headed down to the bar and hung out there for another hour or so just talking and having a good time. The bar itself is almost on the water, and the windows are all open. It ends up making the spot just a perfect location to hang out.

After dinner and drinks we headed back to Anne and Darren's and spent the night there. We got up today to and had breakfast at Tommy's with Anne. Jen and I then headed down to the Rip Curl store down by Trestles, and then back up the coast to Selva. The old trailer park has been long gone, but they've finally started to bulldoze the grounds and dig up all the old plumbing and electrical. Its actually really depressing to see the old hillside just stripped down to the dirt. The grounds are going to be developed into a huge resort, so i never think the beach is going to be the same. Jen and I walked down to the south end of the beach and picked a spot to sit on our asses. We sat there for about an hour and then we both started looking at this one guy in the water. Jen and I both think he looks like her cousin's kid Justin. But we've not seen him in awhile, so we can't be sure. I've got my sunglasses on, and i scramble for my real glasses, so i can see clearly, but then his friend screams, "HEY JUSTIN". Jen and I are laughing our asses off cause we always seem to end up on this beach and bump into random members of her family. So i get up and walk up to justin. I keep my head down and my hat covering my face. About 5 feet away from him, i can tell he's thinking, who the fuck is this guy? So we laugh about bumping into each other, and talk for awhile. He's got an apartment up the road right off of Crown Valley, so we gotta stop by and see the place. Jen and I sit for a little longer and head over to check the spot out. Nice little apartment about 5 minutes from the beach.

Oh, and we got home in record time (for a holiday weekend). We never hit any traffic at all, even when driving the 5 the entire way.

Tomorrow we're just relaxing by the pool with Jen's father and brother, and then BBQing for the 4th.

Durex has a great website at http://www.durexdickerations.com/

BUT i think the greatest part about the site is that if you click on the "under 18 link" you get the great HassleHawk!

The last time i was in London was in 1998. The first day in the city, Jen and I decided to walk from the north end of Hyde Park to Big Ben, while sight seeing all the way. Today i saw the pictures of people walking in the city with the Tube and Busses shut down, and i couldn't help thinking about how much pain i was in at the end of the day. But i gotta think how persistent the people of London are. Even after everything that has happened to them in the last 48 hours, they're not going to quit. I'll be raising a few pints to the people of London tonight.

got nothing done.

Well that's not true. I got the flash communication server installed and i learned as much as i could about it as i could in a couple hours. But it looks like its really straightforward. I've got a little project that i need to build out, thats completely multiuser, and will depend completely on one little flash app. So its a crash course in brain surgery.

The rest of the weekend was spent with Jen's brother David. Bob went to Colorado for the weekend to see Nanna, so we took care of David and just hung out. Friday night at about 10 we tried to watch a movie, but 2 minutes into it, David fell asleep. Well he was up at 4AM, so we gave him a break. Saturday we sat in the pool and relaxed. Part of the day Jen and I looked at a couple houses. We drove by one, and then got an appointment to look at it on Sunday. We had dinner at Outback in monrovia, and headed home. I worked most of the night on another project for work, and then finally headed to bed. So on sunday we went back out to look at a couple houses. The one we got an appointment for was not open, and the relator selling it was not there. Our realtor left a couple messages, and we headed out to look at another house. A little while later we came back to the one we wanted to look at. So long story short. Its in really nice shape, its in a nice neighborhood, and its the perfect size. Even better, its actually in a good price range. So we ran around yesterday and got paperwork all in order. We consulted our resident lawyer and real estate expert, and signed our lives away. So the offer is in, and we'lll see what happens. Great thing about the house is... no huge work needs to be done to it. We'll get AC installed quickly. Maybe before we move in. But other than that i think we're set. Its only 5 minutes from Jen's work, and its no closer or further away from my job, so its good. More to come soon...

Windows NT crashed.
I am the Blue Screen of Death.
No one hears your screams.

A file that big?
It might be very useful.
But now it is gone.

The Web site you seek
Can not be located but
Countless more exist.

Chaos reigns within.
Reflect, repent, and reboot.
Order shall return.

ABORTED effort:
Close all that you have worked on.
You ask way too much.

Yesterday it worked.
Today it is not working.
Windows is like that.

First snow, then silence.
This thousand dollar screen dies
So beautifully.

With searching comes loss
And the presence of absence:
"My Novel" not found.

The Tao that is seen
Is not the true Tao, until
You bring fresh toner.

Stay the patient course
Of little worth is your ire
The network is down

A crash reduces
Your expensive computer
To a simple stone.

Three things are certain:
Death, taxes, and lost data.
Guess which has occurred.

You step in the stream,
But the water has moved on.
This page is not here.

Out of memory.
We wish to hold the whole sky,
But we never will.

Having been erased,
The document you're seeking
Must now be retyped.

Serious error.
All shortcuts have disappeared.
Screen. Mind. Both are blank.

Jen and I ran out on Friday night to Annondale to have dinner with the Martins. The club has a BBQ every friday night of summer and they put on a real party. So we stuffed ourselves with steak and ribs and shrimp and everything else and had a great time. We got home promptly and passed right out.

Saturday was back to the house fun. We put in a second offer on the counter we had received. We're now crossing out fingers that we get it, but we're still looking. We drove by a couple places just to keep our options open, and then called it a day. On our way home we decided to have a really early dinner at Mijaries. We were just about the only people on the patio outside. We sat down and ordered a couple Margaritas and dug into the chips. The people sitting a couple tables away were into about their 5th round, and were honestly the loudest people i've heard at any restaurant in a long time. I was laughing my ass off and enjoying their conversation. It was their grandma's birthday, and she had quite a few drinks. You could tell that one of her grandson's was gay, and his new boyfriend was not to the liking of grandma. But the granddaughter was the loudest of all. She kept yelling OH GRAM!!! HAPPY BIRTHDAY GRAM!!! OH ITS A PARTY GRAM!!! I'm dying laughing as i'm eating. A couple people are sat down at the table next to us, and before they even get around to ordering their drinks, they pop right back up, and i hear one lady in the party say something like "My God! How can they be so loud?!" They went to find a table elsewhere in the restaurant.

So Jen and I got home and i popped in a movie. Now its really really early.... only about 5, but Jen passes out, and i lay down for 2 minutes and i wake up at about midnight. The lights are all out, and Jen has moved from the couch to the bedroom.

I get back up and work for an hour or so, and then crash again. So as a result, i woke up at about 6AM today and couldn't go back to sleep.

We went over to Bob's to use the pool. We stopped by Anthony's for a couple of sandwiches and then took them over to eat on the patio. We sat in the water for a couple hours with David, and then headed back out to look at a open house. Gillian our agent was showing a house in pasadena, and we figured we'd go by and check it out. It turns out that its a beautiful little house up Allen near Dominico's. 3 bedroom, 2 bath, and a garage that's really a nice little back guest house. Well its way too much and we all know the schools in Pasadena suck.... so that settles that. If it was anywhere else i'd want to make a offer on it immediately.

We headed home after that and I've just sat around the house the rest of the day. Jen went out later to look at another house back up in La Crescenta, but its on a busy street... so again... that settles that.

We sat down to another Netflix rental... Roman Holiday. Talk about a classic old melodramatic movie! Its a fun little movie, and Jen gets embarrassed every time Gregory Peck spills a drink in it. anyway... off to work tomorrow, so i gotta get some sleep. We hopefully will get news about the house we made the offer on tomorrow.

German dragged Marz out to the Club they usually have Das Bunker (another night of the week). Last night was Karaoke Night, but i guess its Goth / Industrial Karaoke. So as the story is being told to me, i can't help laughing my ass off. I guess a guy gets up on stage with his own laptop system, and proceeds to start up the music to Ghostbusters... but then Sings the Lyrics to The Hands that Feeds. So i did about 30 seconds of diggings and found that its all thanks to a great mashup called The Ghost that Feeds

Who you gonna call?

Trent Reznor. :)

Last year a guy in a Gorilla suit showed up and sang Happy Birthday to Keegs. So this year he kept his mouth shut and laid low for the day. He hoped that nobody would remember. Well Nick (the guy that got the gorilla last year) is in DC, and everybody else forgot that today was his birthday. So i went to lunch today with him and Jim. When we sat down then i finally found out that this was the birthday lunch. Welll anyway, happy birthday Keegan!

Jen and I went to the Raymond for our 4th aniversary. We sat there and enjoyed ourselves for a couple hours just eating and drinking.

BTW we also put an offer on the House on Las Palmas. We've been looking at it for a long time now waiting for it to go on the market. Crossing our fingers.

Saturday July 23rd 2005 09:24 AM PST
I drove home for work last night so damn hungry i could not get my stomach to stop growling. I had meetings and meetings and a shitload of work to do, and then more meetings. The morning went something like... Meeting with the owner of the company (with the entire department), then get pulled out of that meeting to deal with a client. During the second meeting, I walk the client through the flow of their entire project and take their mood from "evil-fuming-pissed" to... "eating out of our hands". Even after i had really answered all his questions, i turned around and started to push at him. I started pointing questions at him that i know a client must dream of. (well, i was doing damage control) I think the first thing out of my mouth was... "if you track anything in particular, what would be at the top of the list?" he didn't quite understand me because up to that point, we'd been talking about UI and IA. So i follow up with saying we're already going to be tracking each individual user, and the number of games they play. Each game will be timed, and we'll have a running tally of games started, games completed, and current active users. Then he got it. I could hear him get excited. He started asking, "can we track how long a user stays within the site?" I respond "sticky factor"... hehehe, i know i know. fuckin buzz word. So the rest of the conversation went like that. The project is still moving along exactly to plan and schedule, but now at least the client is happy about it.

So back to the other meeting after that, and then back to work, then back to other meetings. The day went on like this all day long, and after it was all done, i had forgotten to go to lunch. I get in the car to drive home and i can't stop thinking about food.

When i get home Jen's being a lazy ass, sitting in front of the TV. I can't blame her. She's home from work, and "home" feels like 110 degrees even with all the fans on. So she orders garbage fast food (no ad's here) and we end up sitting down and flipping channels on the idiot box. The phone rings, and i check the number. Hmmm i have no idea who this is, or where its from. Listen for a message, but nothing. We go back to the idiot box. Jen and I end up watching american chopper, then SciFi (a little stargate), then we flip over to the history channel and are watching a documentary on the history of Edwards AFB. the phone rings again. This time "private caller" Well there are only a few options on the "private caller" front, and one of the top options is my parents. Well let the machine pick it up. Sure enough its my dad. He starts in to some cryptic talk, and then starts into something about a call they got from somebody in San Jose. I pick up the phone and immediately think its bullshit. (i've become very paranoid in recent years) He says it was a disturbing call and i really need to come over and talk. My heart rate must be at about 180bpm and i tell Jen i gotta go over there. I'll call her if everything is ok.

So i drive over and all the time am thinking this has got to be a plot for an intervention or something.

Nope, its legit.

They got a call from a guy who says he's my younger brother from my biological mother and father. So i don't know many details at this point, and what i do know now is completely unconfirmed. Needless to say this is going to be a interesting weekend.

So i sit with my parents and shoot the shit for a couple hours. We've not spoken on good terms since November. Everything is going to be good in the long run, but we're talking again. I've IP banned my parents computer for all the time that we've not been taking, but just recently my mom figured out the google cache of web sites. She figured out a couple days after an entry was posted she could read the cached version on google without being banned. Hmmm could i sue Google for allowing someone to circumvent my security measures? :) i know... fat chance.

anyway, i got home last night at about 1:30 and woke up Jen. I told her all the details i knew, and both of us couldn't sleep for most of the night. I drank a couple shots of the only tequila i have in the house, and started to do my own little google searched. I'm excited. This is going to be a really strange time.

Sunday July 24th 2005 08:37 AM PST
Now looking at all the new details... I really have 2 younger brothers (who are twins), and 3 half brothers and sisters, and a couple of step brothers and sisters, and an Aunt and Uncle. :O

Sunday July 24th 2005 10:25 AM PST
Jen and I went to Parkway Grill last night with Bob, David and Valerie. The food was great as always, and we had a great time. After dinner Jen and I went over to my parent's house to see them together for the first time in a long time. We sat and shot the shit for a couple hours drinking even more. I raided the place for old photos of me growing up so i could put some stuff up online.

Today we're running down to the beach and going to hang out with all the Bermingham clan.

In all the crazy shit that went on this weekend, Jen and I didn't get the house we made a bid on. The winning bid ended up something like $55,000 over asking price. Yikes. It was a nice house, but there's no way we could pay that much. Back to looking.
