November 2006

So the night started off slow. Jen does all the answering the door cause I've got social anxiety disorder, and I can't deal with that many people. :) So we counted about 30 kids in the early evening, and we thought things were going to stay slow all night. There was a LOUD haunted house 2 doors away from us, and we heard from a couple people that it might be scaring a lot of the little kids away from our end of the block. Well it didn't. The Hordes of kids started coming like crazy. The haunted house was at full volume, and you could hear nothing but distorted creepy music and screaming kids. Kids would come in wave after wave, and Jen would sometimes just keep the door open as kids walked up to the door. She'd get back to the tally sheet that we'd set up, and sometimes have to mark 30 at a time. We hit 260 kids and they cleaned us out of candy. It was almost 9PM when it happened, and the haunted house pulled the plug too and the street was peaceful again.

Remember the old fractal forest screensaver? I just was screwing around the other day and made something almost exactly the same (completely by accident). I was really experimenting with a visualization for a XML sitemap.

I'm temped to pack up my canvas and take it with me to Avalon this weekend. I figure i could sit up on the side of a road way up in the hills and paint for a couple hours. You can bet your ass that I'm going to be taking an whole lot of pictures from that particular spot. The original photo I took years ago was only with a 1.7 mega pixel camera, and its getting hard to get the details right looking at this low rez photo. Last night I talked to Jen about bringing the paints at least. I might just do a couple studies from the deck of our place. And looking at the weather... Its gonna be nice over there. Partly cloudy and in the 70s. And best of all its deserted in the off season.

I dragged my ass out of bed early to vote before work. I've still not re-registered at my new address, so I had to drive back to San Marino to vote. I stopped by my parent's house before to compare our choices and to ask em what they thought of the Judicial nominations.

My experience at the polling place was extremely boring compared to all the crazy reports of mass-mayhem at the polls. Everybody at the polling place was nice and polite. No problems with electronic touch-screen machines. Well, there can't be any problems when you use black-dot marked ballots. Yup, thats right, no hanging chads, and no mix ups with electrons.

So after voting I headed to work, and I realized I'm looking forward to nothing but sitting at the Sand Trap and drinking a beer. Oh, that and Tony Hawk's Project 8. Yup the new game is out and I think i might have to pick up a copy on my way home tonight. Actually... its lunchtime... I think i'm going to head to Fry's.

Fry's only had Guitar Hero II, so it looks like i'm going to have to run by GameStop or some other shithole on the way home. I WILL PLAY Tony Hawk tonight.

I can't skip the fact that I went to Chili John's

So i've been talking about doing this for a long ass time, but i've finally got around to it.

A couple years ago I got a Garmin eTrex Legend GPS unit from Jen as a XMAS gift. I started taking it with me EVERYWHERE, and i tracked EVERYTHING. First i just started screwing around with the track data, and then later i started making pdf maps of everywhere i'd gone.

Now these maps take on a timeline. After seeing Flight Patterns by Aaron Koblin at UCLA, i realized that the data I'd been recording could be much more beautiful.

I wrote a script to reduce all the timestamps to the number of seconds into a day. SO... a timestamp that told you it was Oct, 12,2005 00:01:15 would be reduced simply to 75. This was show that this timestamp was 75 seconds into that particular day. Using this method, i could enter all my data into a database and then make selects of blocks of data that represented everywhere i was at a particular second of the day. ALL the locations I'd been in at that moment in time of the day, for the last 2 years.

I focused on the LA area where i spent the majority of my time, and i made PNGs of 15 second blocks. I used GD to load the previous image and superimpose it over the current image at 99%. This created the trail effect of the location dots.

So now really what i see is that over the last 2 years, the clock on my GPS has not always been set accuratly. :P

Its still a work in progress, but this is the first animation.

I avoided political commentary yesterday, but today this made me almost crap my pants laughing.

Who every thought you could make a Mac Geek Joke that's so perfectly Political.

Jen and I got back yesterday from a good little holiday on Catalina. We headed out Thursday and were over on the island by about 3:30. We grabbed our golf cart at Hamilton and promptly did our run to the store and to grab some food. We ended up at the Pizza place next to Armstrong's cause the Sand Trap was already closed for the day. We really took it easy and got to bed early. Friday we both woke up at about 6AM ready to go. I fought the urge to get up and slept a little longer. When we finally did roll out of bed around 8 we headed to the casino dock cafe for breakfast. We spent the rest of the day screwing around and taking a hike up to the Wrigley Memorial. We headed to VP for dinner and then headed back to Hamilton to play dominoes and watch BSG. Saturday we woke up and headed to the busy bee for breakfast and then again did nothing most of the day. We ended up going to Armstrong's for dinner early and then went to see the Prestige at the Casino Theater.

One small thing about the Casino Theater. They ALWAYS play the organ before the movie. And they always play patriotic music. With Veterans day, this patriotic music turned into a incredible patriotic medley of music. The theater is one of the most beautiful old theaters in Southern California. If you're on the island, it doesn't matter what movie is playing... just go see something. (or take the tour and see them play the organ)

It just happened that I wanted to see the Prestige so everything worked out great. I wont go into any huge details of the movie other than it was just as good as i had hoped. Christoper Nolan does a great job again with Christian Bale, and even Huge Jackman pulls out a decent performance. David Bowie's bit part as Tesla pretty much seals the deal.

Sunday morning i got up right after sunrise and started taking pictures. I got a bunch of great ones of the sun over the ocean that i'll post later. We headed back to Dockside for breakfast and then back to the condo to check out. We were on the 11:45 boat and back in LB at about 1. So between LB and Montrose we've gotta get off the 710 freeway and drive through Alhambra and South Pasadena. So on the way we stopped at Twohey's for lunch. After lunch we headed back home and relaxed for the rest of the day.

just proposed as part of the Effective Terrorists Prosecution Act....

Limits the authority of the President to interpret the meaning and application of the Geneva Conventions and makes that authority subject to congressional and judicial oversight

HOLY SHIT! Do i smell the balance of power? Isn't this what WE SHOULD ALREADY HAVE? I am just so happy, and so disappointed at the same time. On one hand, this is a move towards government responsibility and balance, but on the other hand... its just a fuckin band-aid to fix a piece of shit law that never should have been passed (Military Commission Act of 2006).

"I don?t own an iPod. I would never wear an iPod? If this is your primary focus in life - the machines? it?s going to have a staggeringly negative effect, all of this, for America? did you ever talk to these computer geeks? I mean, can you carry on a conversation with them? ?I really fear for the United States because, believe me, the jihadists? They?re not playing the video games. They?re killing real people over there."

Bill O?Reilly

Who writes his material? I mean he can't be writing this himself. He's not that smart. This is PURE genius. This is going to have EVERYBODY pissed off at him, and just get his name spread farther and farther into all types of media.

it worked here... but i just want to point out that he's a windbag that really needs to be laughed at and forgotten.

well i'm ending my days at the cannery and moving on. Or... well moving back. But moving forward... fuck i know this is confusing. I'm heading back to Ignited Minds, and I am really happy about it. I know the drive will kill me, but i'm over it. Its part of the price.

only 2 days left.

but no bullshit... there are a lot of things i'm gonna miss about the cannery.

I just had a conversation with somebody at the office about Thanksgiving. When discussing family gatherings at the holidays he said his extended family was...

"it's fun and medieval at the same time."

i think that about sums it up everywhere. It just gives me a great mental image of packing a broadsword.

Monday November 27th 2006 11:03 AM PST
29.5 miles
1:15 moving time
21:42 stopped time
23.4 MPH moving speed average
18.2 MPH overall speed average

Yup, thats right it took me an hour and a half to get to work. The best part was that even with traffic like shit because of the rain.... people actually caused a traffic jam on broadway to look at a sheet covering a dead body. Yup, thats LA for you. Two police cruisers, a couple cops with rubber gloves, a sheet covering a corpse, and a shitload of dumbass drivers going 3 MPH.

but its good to be back. Heh, they even assigned me a welcome buddy. So he's got an easy job, i've already been around the entire office and said hi to everybody. And introduced myself to the people that are new.
