September 2002

Sunday September 1st 2002 07:13 PM PST
GAWD DAMN IT'S HOT! I walk out to check the temp at 2 today and it was well over 100. And just a few minutes ago i checked it and it was still over 95. Well it's finally cooling off, so i guess i should stop complaining.

This weekend was just PICTURES. I took so many fuckin pictures i can no longer count. On my digital alone i blew through over 250. And on top of that i blew another 6 rolls of 35mm. So.... i guess i should show some of em. All day yesterday was the Epic Summer Jam. They got a half pipe in front of the store and a little stage. There were skaters all day long and the "pros" were the Hurley Team Riders. So...

. There's nothing better than watching guys skate while being able to control the sound board. We just grabbed all the music the pro riders had in their car and blasted it through the speaker stacks we had there. Finally after a bit of trouble the Deviates showed up. There was a scare that they would not be there cause the drummer's mom got in a car accident. So during the scare the guys in the shop called all the friends they had who had bands. SO... when the deviates took the stage, there were now TWO MORE punk bands waiting to play too. SO now instead of 1 punk band you had 3. Damn Fun.

I finally get home and go to fine BBQ at the Clark Byam residence. Word has gotten around about the view from the house and more and more people seem to show up for every BBQ Will has.

Yes's that's Koga's Audi in the foreground. Jen's waiting for me to take her out to dinner, so i'll write more about the BBQ later.

Monday September 2nd 2002 04:08 PM PST
Back to School time is the best time of the year! :( Jen's going nuts and i'm going nuts cause of it. And i just got back from adjusting 20 kid's desks at her classroom. you think that if you're gonna make an adjustment to desks you'd at least raise them 2 inches. or lower them 2 inches for that matter. To adjust a dumpload of desks all A TINY little increment is crazy. But that's just what i did. I think i made them all 3/4inch taller. I really don't think it made a fuck of a difference. Well, other than the fact that i am now a sweaty pile of shit. I need food badly.

Tuesday September 3rd 2002 12:26 AM PST
only a 4.6!! That wasn't even big enough to get me off my fat ass. It was a good "roller" though. Too quick. Anyway, that might be the first earthquake that John and Kate have ever felt, but i don't know if it even woke them up.

Tuesday September 3rd 2002 09:16 AM PST
Maybe i should get off my ass today and do something. Yesterday i didn't do anything. Well i take that back i did make a new buddy icon.

But after that it was all downhill. So i guess it's time to dig into some XML and Flash. Fun fun fun.

Tuesday September 3rd 2002 05:06 PM PST
I got off my ass. I didn't really do ANYTHING, but i got off my ass. I got my car to a SMOG check place and got that taken care of. Then i went to the AAA to get my registration taken care of. Then i ran over to drop off a bunch of film from the skate jam and the weekend. Then when i got home i installed Jabber on my linux box. I know what you're saying now. "but dave, that's something." Kinda like Brewster's millions. You can't have anything to show for the money you spent. Well Jabber didn't work. SO THERE. Jason instead got it running on his box and i'm gonna screw around with it there. Then back to the photo place to pick up the pictures. And now i have finally gotten about 20 of em scanned so i can show em off to George at Epic. So i have done a lot today, but i haven't gotten a lot done. (almost forgot, ran out to get flowers for Jen cause it's the first day back to school)

Tuesday September 3rd 2002 08:19 PM PST
ok, the best way to end a day is to watch a little Fincher. So... i think Seven is in order. Fuck happy happy joy joy movies. I always will opt for the movie that will end with a head in a box. (and the fact that trent's music is over the credits)

Wednesday September 4th 2002 09:21 AM PST
Jen was a mess yesterday when she got home. Usually the first day is not THAT bad, but this year is going to be a little hard. AND not just for Jen. Kate's got a handful from what i hear this year too. So what's the best way to deal with a bad day. Eat really good food and drink a margarita. so we went to Mijaries. Seven was started when we got back and Jen went promptly to bed. I got about hlaf way through it before Will showed up and we started working on Snooze. We've finally gotten a new design that's a little bit better. Should be gonig up in a few days, but until then go check out the one up right now. MovieSnooze

Wednesday September 4th 2002 04:40 PM PST
Finally i broke down and pulled my G3 out of the rack and did a little surgery. I've had a 10/100 ethernet card lying around for a long time and it was just about time i put it into the G3. Now i can actually use it as a firewall cause of it's dual ethernet cards. Won't be the fastest thing in the world but it will work. Well now that i have done it my internal appletalk network is actually useable. Before when i used the g3 to scan and then push images across the network, it would take too damn long. It's not the biggest deal in the world but it make my life a little better.

Thursday September 5th 2002 07:57 AM PST
Well, it was gonna happen eventually. US Basketball's First Loss. I just have this feeling that is a sign for things to come.

Thursday September 5th 2002 10:00 AM PST
so the new ethernet card i dropped into my mac does great with appletalk, but for some reason i can't get TCP/IP to configure over to it. In the TCP/IP control pannel it even shows that it is selected and should be working. I even get a hardware address... OH SHIT Could it be that simple.... i gotta go restart my switch.

Nope, that wasn't it.

Well i guess i might have to switch back to the old interface.

Thursday September 5th 2002 01:42 PM PST
i was so bored today that i started to work on chat again. I didn't even bother using all my old code, i just started from scratch. This module is such a joke. It's only about 10k and has all the features it's gonna ever need. I don't think i'm gonna leave it like it is though. I was thinking of more of an interface where you kick something around like a little ball. Not really a chat room, but more like a playroom. If you leave it a mess, the next person who visits can clean it up or keep playing. AND multiple people can play with the stuff in the interface or fight over objects.

Friday September 6th 2002 01:40 PM PST
I finally got a second wind at 1AM. I started to deal with some encryption that i need to use for a few projects. I found a great site that is for military graduate students at a naval academy. The teacher has one of the largest descriptions of all the basic types of encryption and the pro's and con's of using them. I got some really cool ideas from the stuff i read and i've built a few test applications to encode plaintext. So far so good, but i've gotta translate all my work form lingo (director) to PHP and FLASH. I just don't think that Flash is a secure enough file format. As far as i can tell people are able to crack the .swf file itself and read your code. If that's the case there is no reason to build AND kind of encryption at all in flash. It's just gonna be worthless.

Friday September 6th 2002 05:21 PM PST
i got caught at will's house. Jon left his camera running and caught a nice belch. So without delay.

Here it is

Friday September 6th 2002 05:58 PM PST
I was building a new little game, and because of it's nature i had to look for pictures of Eminem and Moby. Now there is NO CONTEST when it comes to music in my opinion. Moby wins any day, hands down. But i have to admit, there are many many many many more pictures of eminem out there on the web. That's cause there are just more damn people that listen to eminem. Unfortunate, but true. BUT... these pictures of emeniem just make me laugh. I gotta take more time and maybe listen to his music. Cause, how can a guy who would wear and ALF t-shirt be that bad?

Friday September 6th 2002 07:23 PM PST
This is too fuckin cool. I was digging through a bunch of papers trying to find my pink slip to my white honda. Guess what i found. Well i didn't find the pink slip. That's for sure. I did find a piece of paper that looked like a piece of trash, but with a closer look i realized that most of the writing on it was not mine. At the top i see 874-PUNK. I fall to the floor laughing. This is a set of directions to Jason's old house in Hollywood. And the best part about it is.... If you look closely at the pencil writing, you'll realize that i'd written Wipeout XL codes on the piece of paper later. LOL this brings back memories of Hollywood.

Saturday September 7th 2002 12:46 PM PST
I just got finished with Dogtown and the Z boys. GAWD DAMN. This is one of the best documentaries that i have seen in a long while. It's just cool to look at all these old skool skaters and see the places that they started out. I fuckin used to work down in venice and know a shitload of those old spots. I got Jason's copy of "ban this" (sorry jason), but i'm gonna pop that in now and watch it. And if you've got the cash and a DVD player, go buy dogtown now and watch it. :)

Saturday September 7th 2002 06:10 PM PST
i failed to say that i also picked up the single for Baby's Got A Temper by Prodigy last night. I actually really like the way the E-CD material came out. I always like to have a production copy of the stuff i help to build. I just was very suprised when i opened the package. I found a CD that had no printing on it at all. I still have not heard from Brian and Wendy if this correct or not, but it is very strange. Anyway, i already love the shit on the single and can't wait for the rest of the album.

Now on top of it all you will notice that the single contains all the vocal tracks without music at all. Now this is shit that i wish a lot of other bands and musicians would do. It just makes it so much fuckin easier to remix their work. And finally Prodigy is making the statment, "Please have fun with the sounds and REMIX it"

Sunday September 8th 2002 11:52 PM PST
tonight felt like Jason was back in LA. We worked all night on the old chat client we built years ago. It just used to be normal for us to talk about 10 times on the phone in one night (while smoking like fiends) while we were coding. So. long story short. we had to get the chat back up and running to run a chat for Gigi Edgley because the news has finally hit that SciFi will not be picking up Farscape for another season. As a result the cast and crew will be spending their last day on the sets tomorrow. The sets are then scheduled for demolition Sept 11, or if USA networks responds to the outcry of fans letters, maybe then there might be a little more time. At this point things don't look too good.

Check out the new Gigi Chat.

Monday September 9th 2002 12:14 AM PST
Will started something. YES I DO NEED GLASSES. I can tell him to shut the fuck up as much as i want to, but he's been talking about it so goddamn much that other people have joined in. it's gotten to be fuckin funny now. I used to be really pissed cause he'd bring it up at the worst fuckin time and just make fun of the fact that i can't see shit. So now John's wife Kate has gotten in on the action, and she's not the only one. Jen has mounted an assault on me and has made allies with both MY mother and HER mother. Now i got the 3 closest women in my life all buggin me about my eyes. Then the fuckin greatest thing happened. I was over at Steve and Vera's just hanging out. Baka (vera's mom) gets home after closing the store (yes, vera and george own epic, their mom baka, usually closes the store at night). So we all sit around looking at all the shots i took a couple weeks ago of the skaters on the ramp at the store. So... they both notice the fact that i am blind as a bat and ask me, "Why the fuck don't you have glasses?"

then the great part happens

Vera makes a 180 and doesn't bitch at me that i am a dipshit or anything like that. She just steps to the side and takes a look at me and asks, "what kinda rims?" i respond "buddy holly" and that was it. We talked about all the options that i shoudl try out. She game me a laundy list of places that should go to check out frames.

So to you out there (Will) it will not be long now.

Monday September 9th 2002 12:21 AM PST
OH i forgot to tell you about Saturday. I DID NOTHING!!! Well not exactly nothing. I went to breakfast with jen and then just sat around the house and did stupid shit. I talked about encryption with Jen at breakfast and that led to a little advance in my methods. I replaced one part of my code with a 20 cycle, 8bit key generator. So the encoder really pulls everything apart. :) anyway, John and Kate Bell went out to dinner with me and Jen and we all went over to Paseo Colorado (YES, the fuckin mall) I feel like i live there. anyway, after a nice dinner at Border Grill, we come back to our house and John and I get to have a Quake LAN battle in what Kate now calls "the Computer Lab". Jen and her both think i should get a little sign outside that says "Computer Lab Hours". My response... why post hours when you're open all the time?

Tuesday September 10th 2002 04:31 PM PST
I am having a lot of trouble sleeping normal hours recently. I don't know what exactly made me get up at 7:30AM today, but then what is more puzzleing is that i left the house and went to take pictures. I have to admit it was a little strange, but there are some things in Pasadena that just look good a sunrise.

Wednesday September 11th 2002 06:37 PM PST
GIGI EDGLEY KICKED MY ASS!

I never thought that the GIGI chat would kick the shit out of my chat engine so badly. Jason and I were frantic to get the thing up and working and were making patches to the software minutes before the chat was going to happen. Even while 40 to 50 people were already waiting. Then when the time rolls around we max the user limit. Jason had to open up the IRC server to more users just so gigi could get in. So we finally peeked at 171 users. And i have to say this was a trail by fire. I need to get things in the code hashed out. A lot of things i did to make the code work actually made it fall apart with hundreds of users. I need to go back to the drawing board with some of the code and just rethink everything. but all in all it was a great time. Gigi seemed to be having a great time and fans were going nuts to be in an unmoderated chat with somebody. anyway, ideas are going through my head of how to make things better. Back to the code.

Jason told me to "Shut my fuckin YAP" earlier today

Yap Pronunciation Key (yp, y?p)

An island group and state of the Federated States of Micronesia in the western Caroline Islands of the western Pacific Ocean. Discovered by the Spanish in 1791, it became part of a Japanese mandate after 1920 and fell to U.S. forces in 1945.

He then said a few other things using the words "GOB" and "GOBShite"

So i looked them up too

gob Pronunciation Key (gb)

n.
A small mass or lump.
Informal. A large quantity. Often used in the plural: a gob of money; gobs of time.

gob∑shite Pronunciation Key (gbsht)

n. Chiefly British Slang
A person regarded as mean or contemptible.

I didn't think there would be a definition for Gobshite. :)

#73

So last year Barry Bonds hit homerun #73 of his career. The ball is valued at over one million dollars. When the ball dropped into the crowd one guy got his glove on it and then was mobbed by the crowd. And another guy came up with the ball. NOW HERE's THE FUNNY PART. A judge is now saying that the court case that is now coming from the two men shall be sent to a fuckin Jurry. LOL People are actually considering using INSTANT REPLAY to decide the case. INSTANT REPLAY ON THE CROWD!! LOL that's fuckin funny. Next they will have rule books for crowd behaivor.

When making a catch of a homerun ball. The person catching the ball must call for a fair catch or all other spectators sitting within five (5) rows and lettered seats (or numbered depending on the stadium) may then make a vote of no confidence in which them may by majority club (beat, mob or otherwise harm) the unsuspecting catcher of the ball while he (or she) is looking into the air. Also this clause protects the rights of all vedors within the said seating area. A vendor may catch the ball if and only if they give free beer (or peanuts) to all spectators seated in the area. If a dispute between vendors occurs then the senior peanut vendor of the stadium shall make the decision.

mood : destroyed

if that's even a fuckin mood.

i don't know what to do with myself today. It's just become a day of second-guessing everything i do. Fuck it's just become a year of second-guessing. nuff said.

----

Do you know how far this has gone?
Just how damages have I become?
Where I think I can overcome
It runs even deeper

And In a dream I?m a different me
With a perfect you
We fit perfectly
And for once in my life I fell complete-
And I still want to ruin it

Why do lyrics always seem to fit on days like today.

Just when i thought life could not get any more STUPID.
Levis brings me back to the wonderful world of reality.

Sunday September 15th 2002 12:29 PM PST
So, to get over all the fucked up stuff that's been going on in our lives, Jen and I decided to forget about everything and just go to the beach yesterday.

Traffic sucked as always, but what do you expect in SoCal.

it's exactly what we needed. We got down into lagoooooona and made our ritualistic trip to the Pottery Shack. I don't know if we actually ever like anything there or it's the fact that Jen knows there's a bathroom there. Whatever... So we wander around looking at bad ceramics and then down to Selva. We sat around just looking at the ocean for a couple hours just doing nothing, then went to dinner at Cannon's overlooking the Dana Point Harbor.

Tuesday September 17th 2002 10:54 PM PST
Damn, it's almost wednesday. Where did the week go? I feel like i haven't gotten anything done at all this week, but i've been doing so much. I sat here today and built little PHP apps for moviesnooze, and have been workin on the chat all the time too. Jason actually got the damn Flash chat to connect to the IRC server, but we're both having problems with the onData event handler. It's just so damn stupid that Flash will only respond to a specific null character. or at least that's what we think is the problem. Anyway, i've got to find some work. I've been "OUT" for too long to not really have steady income. I've got the normal little projects, but they are not keeping me going. I've gotta find something bigger. Time to get off my ass.

shit so simple can make such a difference. I finally moved my computer speakers from the floor. I made little arms up from my desk so that they can sit at about 5 feet up. I knew i should have done it a long time ago, but i seem to have a lot of time on my hands these days. Well, now to the mixing boards and the 4 track. I need to make a trip to ikea.

Saturday September 21st 2002 08:24 AM PST
Why am i up at 8 AM on a Saturday? Well maybe it's because i went to bed at 9:30 last night. Then i guess the question is WTF was i doing in bed at 9:30? Well.... don't ask so many damn questions. I think i'm gonna go try to get something done.

Monday September 23rd 2002 03:17 PM PST
Ok, i never thought car jacking would become this much of a problem. Flame Thrower Car

Tuesday September 24th 2002 02:51 PM PST
The job search is on. I've been looking at all the possible places that i might like to work. I've narrowed it down to a handful, and tomorrow my resume will be complete. So tomorrow...

Tuesday September 24th 2002 04:14 PM PST
i really hate this shit

./configure --prefix=/usr/local/apache/ --activate-module=src/modules/php4/libphp4.a --enable-module=rewrite --enable-module=speling --enable-module=info --enable-module=usertrack

Tuesday September 24th 2002 10:23 PM PST
Ok, i've been getting my resume ready, and i'm now at the edge of getting a job. So what do i do? I freak out. Yup. I've been sitting on my ass for 6 months at home doing NOTHING!!! So now that i am thinking of going back to the 9 to 5 world i am trying to make up for all the lost time that i should have been spending making something. Now the lost time has produced a little piece of artwork. It's not done yet, but i figured i'd blog it cause some people have already asked about it.

Here's the work so far.

So this is from clay beginning to the laytex mold and plaster 'mother mold'. Now i just gotta wait a day or so for the laytex on the clay to vulcunize (i don't really know how to spell that) so then i can pull the laytex mold off of the clay and then pour plaster casts of the gargoyle. or cement or wax or something. I just had to make something. And since i have totally killed apache and php on my linux box, i figured i'd stick to things that i can actually do.

Thursday September 26th 2002 06:41 PM PST
ok, the first cast came out a little fucked up. It had a few bubbles in it and i didnt wait long enough for the latex to dry. So the first mold is kinda useless. Now i'm just cleaning up the cast that i made out of plaster and i'm gonna make a new mold from it. I think i can get the texture of the surface a little better and get a little better mold made.
