Last night Jen and I went to go see a play in hollywood that an college friend of Jen's directed. This was her first directing credit, and because of that i can't blame her for how bad it was. I can't even explain how fuckin bad it was. She didn't write it, so i won't blame her. But... whoever did write it... GAWD DAMN. Ok, the setting was a "room in lebanon" in or around 1991. The characters were an American, an Irishman, and and Englishman. Now just from this you can already see that this is turning into a bad joke. (There was an Ameican, Irishman and an Englishman driving in a car.) Yikes. So they are all hostages and they are all going crazy in this little cell that they share. THAT's IT. There was no in depth development of the characters. You barely even got to know them. You don't care about them. You think, OH MY this is awful that this guy i don't know is in this room in Lebanon.... Oh, actually this is a guy who can't get a job in hollywood and is unlucky enough to star in a play that SUCKS. I'm sorry, the characters were as shallow as the standard sterotypes of each countries' people. I guess that's what pissed me off so much. These people weren't people at all they were just the standard facades of people. Ok, i can't say it was all that bad. The set was nicely built, the lighting was great. They actually had a florescent tube above them that would give the set a green diseased glow. They had music ques that also came in and out as the men would slip in and out of sanity. As they did this they would usually start singing old 40's and 50's pieces of music. All in all... I can't blame anybody on the cast and crew of this play. They all worked hard and did the best they could do with a awful piece of shit writing.
