You always watch old movies and it seems like they never are quite as good as you remember them. I feel that way about a lot of 80's movies. But there is one exception (at least for me). Better Off Dead is hands down one of the greatest movies of all time! I finally got around to buying it on DVD last night and then subjected my wife (who had not seen it) to the jokes that she had alread heard referenced by many of my friends. At the first mention of two dollars, jen got this puzzled look on her face and finally asked, "so this is where that stupid fuckin line comes from?" Well anyway, i usually judge a movie by the embarrassment factor. This means if a situation in the movie can be akward enough to make Jen squirm, get up from the couch and walk into the kitchen for no reason then it is a good movie. Movies like Rushmore illustrate this perfectly. Most of the movie, Jen spent in the kitchen. :) Better off dead performed great on this scale. Jen got up no less that 5 times during the movie to get a drink of water, wash a dish that had already been washed, check the stove, look in the freezer, and turn on the garbage dissposal. I just sat and laughed at the movie.

Good ol' Lane Myer. You know, this was a movie that I never saw as a kid, and finally got talked into watching (or badgered is more like it) when I was around 19, and I just could not figure out what people thought was so funny about it. But then I watched it here and there over the years, and at some point in there I became a fan. While I wouldn't go so far as to call it one of the best movies ever, or even one of the best comedies ever (I think I'll make a list of that on my blog though), "Better Off Dead" is a great and truly inspired piece of filmmaking. I had to watch it here at work recently (or rather, I volunteered to watch it), and enjoyed it as always. You gotta love the appearances by Booger and the bad guy from Karate Kid 2 in it lol
