I found a use for my windows 2000 box! I could not believe it but i actually am using it for ONE THING. The other day when i got my new router i was really quick in pulling apart my network. I had ethernet cable all over the place and was port mapping everything in no time. BUT i forgot one thing. The OLD POS quadra 610 (68030 processor) that was now sitting on my floor was not only my old router, but it was my print server too. DOH! So i figured, no problem. I can get my old mac g3 to be the print server. Easy enough. Wrong. My laser printer is just about as old as the quadra. It's a HP 4ML which only has a 8 pin serial cable or a parallel cable input. The G3 i have has been upgraded to OS 10.2.4 and, if you don't know this, Apple has discontinued support for serial connections under OS X. So that means i cannot connect the printer to the G3 cause the OS won't communicate with it AT ALL. :) this made me so happy. Well, what are my other options. I could go buy a serial to USB adapter made by somebody like Keyspan. I've dealt with these things before. They work great, but good luck finding drivers that work with them. So i actually started looking at the option of running a print server on my win 2000 box. Now, i have to admit this was a lot more simple that i thought. Go under admin tools, open up services, and start TCP/IP print server. AND because it's printing via parallel, it's actually FASTER than the old 8pin serial! LOL
